Invasive Species
The Great Lakes are heavily impacted by invasions of non-native species and the lab is continually involved in studying their impacts on Great Lakes ecosystems. Students are conducting research on the effects of toxic algae, and physical and chemical contaminants on invasive mussel survival and spawning. Field experiments and surveys have been conducted to understand the factors that influence the invasion of round gobies, and zebra and quagga mussels throughout the Rouge and Clinton River watershed. The lab also conducts long-term monitoring of invasive mussels veligers in the Detroit River to understand population and seasonal trends. |
